Heavy Cargo Transport

Oversized, overweight & project cargo moved safely across all corridors

Heavy Cargo Transport

When Standard Trucks Won't Cut It

Heavy cargo transport is a specialist discipline requiring route surveys, structural engineering input, multi-authority permits, escort vehicles, and meticulous timing. Fort & Freight's heavy cargo division has moved power generation equipment, mining machinery, drilling rigs, transformers, and prefabricated structures across multiple countries and borders.

We own and operate a fleet of extendable lowbeds, step-frame trailers, and flat-top vehicles. For truly exceptional loads, we partner with SPMT (self-propelled modular transporter) operators to move cargo that no conventional trailer can carry.

What Counts as Heavy Cargo?

Any load exceeding standard limits requires our heavy cargo service

Over-Weight

Any single piece or combined load exceeding 28 tonnes on a standard articulated truck, requires overload permits and often a route restriction survey.

Out-of-Gauge (OOG)

Cargo wider than 2.5 m, taller than 4.2 m, or longer than the trailer bed, requires pilot cars, traffic department notification, and night-time movement schedules.

Industrial Machinery

Turbines, generators, transformers, compressors, mining equipment, and oil & gas plant components requiring specialist lashing and blocking plans.

Renewable Energy Components

Wind turbine blades (35–65 m), nacelles, and tower sections for growing renewable energy infrastructure projects worldwide.

Construction & Pre-Fab

Pre-fabricated steel structures, bridge beams, precast concrete segments, and modular buildings for roads, rail, and infrastructure projects.

Port-to-Site Haulage

Collection of project cargo from major ports (break-bulk and ro-ro) for inland delivery to project sites across the region.

Heavy Cargo, Our Process

1

Survey & Plan

Route survey, bridge load calculations, and overhead clearance checks. Engineering lashing and blocking plan prepared.

2

Permits & Escorts

All road transport authority and cross-border overload permits obtained. Police escort and pilot cars arranged.

3

Load & Move

Specialist crew supervises rigging and loading. The convoy moves at permitted times (often night) to minimise traffic disruption.

4

Discharge & Position

Equipment is offloaded and positioned at site with riggers. Full documentation and site delivery certificates provided.

Heavy Cargo, FAQs

Single-trip overload permits typically take 3–7 business days depending on the country. Road authority approvals for very exceptional loads (over 80 tonnes) may take 10–15 days. We start the permit process in parallel with route planning, so the timeline is as short as possible. Cross-border permits add 5–10 business days per country.
We coordinate rigging, crane hire, and heavy lift at both origin and destination. While we do not own cranes ourselves, we work with certified lifting contractors and prepare the lift plan as part of our project management scope.
Yes. We regularly move heavy and project cargo from major seaports and break-bulk terminals to inland destinations worldwide. We handle all port clearance, transit bonds, and cross-border permits as a single integrated service.
We need: total weight (gross), dimensions (length : width : height), origin and destination (with GPS coordinates if a site location), desired movement date, and any site access restrictions. Photos of the cargo and site access points are very helpful. The more detail you provide, the more accurate our initial quotation.
